Foreword by Tia Newcomer, CEO of CaringBridge

When Cris Ross and Ed Marx were diagnosed with cancer, they thought they knew what to do next. They were, after all, executives at two of the premiere hospitals in the United States—Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. But even decades of obsessing about effective delivery of patient care could not have prepared them for the emotional and logistical complexity of navigating the healthcare system. If it was this hard for them, how hard was it for everyone else?

Diagnosed is the book Cris and Ed wish they’d had when they embarked on their medical journeys, offering guidance, strategies, and more than a few checklists on how to:

  • Process the shock and grief of a diagnosis
  • Advocate for yourself (or your loved one)
  • Harness the power of shared decision-making
  • Access the best resources and technologies to support your recovery
  • Create a personalized care plan that reflects your values and goals
  • Celebrate your milestones, honor your losses, and embrace your new normal

Cris Ross is Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Mayo Clinic, with more than 30 years of prior experience in healthcare, technology and government. Since joining in 2012, he has revamped IT strategy, helped lead an enterprise-wide EHR convergence program, developed partnerships and initiated major innovation programs in data, analytics and machine learning. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, he held technology and business leadership roles with Surescripts, MinuteClinic and UnitedHealth Group. He has served as a board member or advisor to many healthcare organizations.

Ed Marx is an influential, veteran IT leader with deep experience in healthcare. His roles include being the CEO of Divurgent, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO) for Tech Mahindra Health & Life Sciences and the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Cleveland Clinic. He was also the governor-appointed chairman of the Texas Health Services Authority for eight years and a U.S. Army combat medic and combat engineer officer. He is currently CEO of Marx Advisory, a company that helps healthcare executives and organizations achieve objectives and key results.

Patrick Lawlor is an accomplished audiobook narrator, stage actor, director, and combat choreographer. The recipient of an Earphones Award, he has also been a finalist for an Audie Award.
