Hoke Moseley has had enough. Tired of struggling against alimony payments, two teenage daughters, a very pregnant and very single partner, and a low-paying job as a Miami homicide detective, Hoke moves to Singer Island and vows never to set foot on the mainland again. But on the street, career criminal Troy Louden is hatching plans of his own with a gang that includes a disfigured hooker, a talentless artist, and a clueless retiree. But when Louden's simple robbery results in ruthless and indiscriminate bloodshed, Hoke quickly remembers why he is a cop and hurls himself back into the world he meant to leave behind forever.

A masterly tale of midlife crisis and murder, Sideswipe is a page-turning thriller packed with laughs, loaded with suspense, and featuring one of the most truly original detectives of all time.

Charles Willeford (1919-1988) was an American writer of fiction, poetry, autobiography, literary criticism, and twenty novels, best known for his Hoke Moseley series, including Miami Blues, as well as such classics as Cockfighter and The Woman Chase.

Reviews

“No one writes a better crime novel than Charles Willeford.”

“Hoke Moseley is a magnificently battered hero. Willeford brings him to us lean and hard and brand-new.”

“[The author has] a master’s insight into the humid decadence of South Florida and its polyglot tribes. Nobody does that as well as Mr. Willeford.”

“Extraordinarily winning…Pure pleasure…Mr. Willeford never puts a foot wrong.”

“A blend of gripping action and wry, off-beat humor.”

“Willeford has a marvelously deadpan way with losers on both sides of the law.”

“The chapter-by-chapter entertainment is rich, distinctive, disturbing—with a grimly fanciful view of human nature reminiscent of Thomas Berger.”

“Another unrelenting entry in the Hoke Moseley series. Distinguished by cleverly sustained tension, drolly observant vignettes of Miami life, and a narrative that moves with unsettling ease from the routine to the terrifying, Sideswipe develops two tales of loneliness and frustration that lead to a bloody confrontation between the two principal characters…Willeford writes with offhand grace, supporting his saga of sad lives with well-detailed, multilayered characterizations.”

“Nobody writes like Charles Willeford…He is an original—funny, weird, and wonderful.”
