The first in a charming, evocative, and sharply plotted Victorian crime series starring a detective duo to rival Holmes and Watson

After her father dies, March Middleton has to move to London to live with her guardian, Sidney Grice, the country's most famous private detective. It is 1882, and London is at its murkiest yet most vibrant, wealthiest yet most poverty stricken. No sooner does March arrive than a case presents itself: a young woman has been brutally murdered, and her husband is the only suspect. The victim's mother is convinced of her son-in-law's innocence, and March is so touched by her pleas that she offers to cover Sidney's fee herself.

The investigation leads the pair to the darkest alleys of the East End, and every twist leads Sidney Grice to think his client is guilty. But March is convinced he is innocent. Around them London reeks with the stench of poverty and gossip, the case threatens to boil over into civil unrest, and Sidney Grice finds his reputation is not the only thing in mortal danger.

M. R. C. Kasasian was raised in Lancashire, England. He has had careers as varied as factory hand, wine waiter, veterinary assistant, fairground worker, and dentist. He is the author of the Gower Street Detective series and lives with his wife in England.

Lindy Nettleton is a professional actress and a registered nurse who was born in England and lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Scotland, and various places in England before coming to the United States. Apart from acting and narrating audiobooks, she runs her own wellness business. She is now a US citizen and is happy to make Newport, Rhode Island, her home.

Reviews

“One of the most delightful and original new novels of the year, this is the first in a series that could well become a cult. Grice and Middleton promise to become a positive treat. Catch them now.”

“[A] sparkling debut…Playful references suggest that Arthur Conan Doyle will model Sherlock Holmes on Grice. But unlike Holmes and Watson, the feisty, gin-swigging Middleton and irascible, mercenary Grice are evenly matched in both brains and determination. Their clever sparring, the appealing secondary characters, and an ingenious plot bode well for future installments.”

“A fast-paced, witty book. While March must overcome both the prejudices of those who see her as ‘mere Miss Middleton,’ Grice has to readjust his ideas about the intelligence and capability of women as he begins to accept his goddaughter as a possible assistant. Although the parallels are unmistakable, Grice and Middleton are refreshingly different from Holmes and Watson.”

“A Victorian detective solves a mystery but meets his match in his independent-minded young ward…Kasasian’s debut is an unflinching look at the darker side of Victorian London…Clever plotting, morbid humor, and colorful characters.”

“Funny, fresh, and sharply plotted.. starring a detective duo to rival Holmes and Watson.”

“Narrator Lindy Nettleton portrays the unlikable Sidney Grice, a private detective, in appropriately snooty tones.”
