The rumor of the flood to come was too terrible to be true, and like most, Re Jana does not believe it. How could a god—anyone's god—determine who deserves to live and who to die?

It was the rising waters that chased Re Jana's family from their home in the marshes. To the desert they fled, following the trail of animals and people who had gone before them. And there, in the dry center of the desert, rose the frame of a boat of unprecedented proportions, Noah's ark.

Even as she falls in love with the builder's son, Ham, and panic spreads in the gathered tribes, Re Jana questions all that she hears and believes her family will be saved, even as the deluge begins and the doors to the ark are sealed.

Anne Provoost studied literature at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and upon completing her studies, she moved to the United States and wrote her first novel. She was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature in 2003. Her four previous books have been translated into ten languages and have received practically every major literary award for books in Dutch. She lives with her husband and three children in Antwerp, Belgium.

Marguerite Gavin has recorded more than three hundred audiobooks. She is a winner of both AudioFile Earphones and Publishers Weekly Listen-Up awards. She lives with her family around Washington, DC.

Reviews

“A gripping, epic drama—part love story and part novel of ideas.”

“Fascinating…the account is so detailed that readers will almost need to wring their clothes out as they follow the story.”

“Issues raised in the narrative may well provoke readers’ thoughts about the nature of faith, goodness, and cruelty.”

“Provoost’s landscape is rich with description and drama. Marguerite Gavin’s deep, resonant voice provides the right classical tone for an interpretation of a biblical event.”

“Exquisitely detailed and intelligently written…A vast piece that strikingly reveals the human condition at the hour of its destruction.”

“Provoost uses the story of the building of the great ship and the coming of the flood to study how humans respond in times of great cataclysms…Gavin’s subdued and sensitive reading captures Re Jana’s growing fears as the world she knows begins to change and disappear.”

“Provoost minces no words when describing the terrified bewilderment of both human beings and animals at being left behind to drown in the deluge, and the single-mindedness of the Builder (Noah) inexorably driven to obey his tribal god…Reader Gavin’s expert, semi-voiced narration keeps it lively. Her enunciation is clear, and her voice well pitched and appealing.”
