In 2006 he won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role Award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards, for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. Holdbrook-Smith has appeared in a number of TV series and movies, including Little Britain and Doctor Strange.
