Recognized as the inspiration for George Orwell's 1984, We is the archetype of the modern dystopia, or anti-Utopia: a great prose poem detailing the fate that might befall us all if we surrender our individual selves to some collective dream of technology and fail in the vigilance that is the price of freedom. Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884-1937) was a naval architect by profession whose lifetime spanned both tsarist and communist Russia, both of which forced him into exile. He wrote short stories, plays, and essays, but is best known for his dystopian masterpiece We, which was written in 1920-21 and soon translated into most of the world's languages, but did not appear in Russia until 1988. Other notable works include The Islanders, A Fisher of Men, and A Provincial Tale.
Grover Gardner, a professional actor, director, and teacher, has narrated over 650 audiobooks. He was named one of the Best Voices of the Century by AudioFile magazine as well as a Golden Voice, and he has received over twenty AudioFile Earphones Awards.
