Teams of dedicated, highly specialized soldiers trained to a higher standard than regular forces; an armamentarium of advanced weapons and tactics; a variety of exotic, critical assignments for the good of the nation; in short, the U.S. Special Forces seem tailor-made for Tom Clancy, progenitor of the techno-thriller. In this factual account written with General Carl Steiner (Ret.), a commander who held responsibility for all U.S. Special Operations forces across all service lines, we get special insight into a largely secretive community whose members do not talk about their work. We hear about it only afterwardsā€”the Achille Lauro hijacking, the "takedown" of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, the efforts to find Aidid in Somalia.

Thirty years agoĀ Tom ClancyĀ was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimoreā€™s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort,Ā The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto theĀ New York TimesĀ bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it ā€œthe perfect yarn.ā€ From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.

General Carl StinerĀ was born in LaFollette, Tennessee, on September 7, 1936. In 1958, General Stiner graduated from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned in the Infantry. During his 35-year career, General Stiner commanded the Armyā€™s preeminent contingency strike forces; including the Joint Special Operations Command, the 82d Airborne Division, and the XVIII Airborne Corps. With an extensive background in special operations, General Stinerā€™s missions have involved capturing the terrorists in the Achille Lauro hijacking, the Panama invasion and the capture of Manuel Noriega, and all special operations activities during Operation Desert Storm.

A veteran stage performer and audiobook narrator,Ā Jonathan MaroszĀ has regional and national stage credits ranging from works by Shakespeare to modern day.
