Vigàta is bustling as the new filming location for a Swedish television series set in 1950. In the production frenzy, the director asks the locals to track down movies and vintage photos to faithfully recreate the air of Vigàta in that time. Engineer Ernesto Sabatello, while rummaging in the attic of his house, finds some films shot by his father from 1958 to 1963—always on the same day; March 27, and always the same shot: the outside wall of a country house.

Montalbano hears the story and, intrigued by the mystery of it, begins to investigate its meaning. Meanwhile, a middle school is threatened by a group of armed men—but a closer look at the situation finds Montalbano looking into the students themselves and finally delving into the world of social media.

Andrea Camilleri (1925–2019) wrote the internationally bestselling Inspector Montalbano mysteries as well as historical novels. His books have been made into television shows in Italy and translated into thirty-two languages. His thirteenth Montalbano novel, The Potter’s Field, won the Crime Writers’ Association International Dagger Award and was long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Grover Gardner is an award-winning narrator with over a thousand titles to his credit. Named one of the “Best Voices of the Century” and a Golden Voice by AudioFile magazine, he has won three prestigious Audie Awards, was chosen Narrator of the Year for 2005 by Publishers Weekly, and has earned more than thirty Earphones Awards.

Stephen Sartarelli is an award-winning translator and poet.

Reviews

"The Safety Net, Camilleri’s twenty-sixth Inspector Montalbano mystery novel, proves to be every bit as droll, as delicious, and as darkly tough as the first twenty-five.”

“Technologies of the past and present pose challenges for Inspector Montalbano in The Safety Net…Montalbano becomes intrigued by the discovery of films—shot on the same day each year, at the same location—and what the motivation was behind the films.”

“Offers a rich, nuanced mix of plot elements…As the cases conclude, with none of the resolutions showing up on official records, readers will feel a pang of loss that this may be one of the last visits they’ll have from an old, wise friend.”

“Revered Italian author Camilleri created an enduring, award-winning series that is internationally recognized. This twenty-fifth book is absorbing, cerebral, and infused with humor as well as tantalizing descriptions of Sicilian cuisine.”

“Much ado about nothing? Yes, maybe, but with the charismatic inspector, nothing is always more than it seems.”

“Both darker and more absurd than previous romps, the latest Montalbano is a bracing cautionary tale.
